UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and ESD

Internationally recognized under the framework of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme, UNESCO Biosphere Reserves (BR) are model areas that aim to balance preservation and sustainable use, drawing attention as “places to learn about sustainable development.” There are 759 BR sites in 136 countries around the world, with 10 of those registered sites being located in Japan (as of July 2024).

In UNESCO BR, there is an abundance of nature, plus a wealth of resources for learning about the history, tradition, and culture of working in harmony with nature, making them an ideal place to put ESD into practice. And it is fair to say that ESD, in fostering those who will usher in sustainable local societies, is an essential element for UNESCO BR.

Among the schools whose efforts are presented this time, the following schools put ESD into practice in their local UNESCO BR.

Tadami Biosphere Reserve: Tadami Municipal Tadami Junior High School(SDGs Committee/Student Council)

Minakami Biosphere Reserve: Minakami Municipal Niiharu Elementary School(5th grade)

Mount Hakusan Biosphere Reserve: Ono Municipal Sakadani Elementary School(5th and 6th grades)

Aya Biosphere Reserve: Aya Municipal Aya Junior High School(student council)

Shiga Highland Biosphere Reserve: Yamanouchi Municipal Higashi Elementary School(6th grade) Yamanouchi Municipal Junior High School(1th grade)

Minami-Alps Biosphere Reserve: Iida Municipal Toyama Junior High School(2th grade)
